The Russian team at the group stage beat the Swiss (1: 0) and the Danes (2: 0), losing to the Czechs (5: 6 from). In the women's hockey tournament, the Canadian team in the final defeated the US team with a score of 4: 2. The third place was taken by the Finnish team, the Russian team in the quarterfinals lost to the Switzers (2: 4).

The Russian national team played for the third time in the final of the Olympics. In 1998, the Russians lost to the Czechs (0: 1), and in 2018 they defeated the Germans (4: 3 in overtime). The Russian team also won the bronze awards of the 2002 Olympics. The Finnish team first won the gold medals of the Olympics, on the account of the Finns also two silver and four bronze awards.

In the medal standings of the Olympic Games in Beijing, the Russian team took ninth place, winning six gold, 12 silver and 14 bronze medals.
