The starting match of the first European Championship was the most effective in the history of final tournaments, although in the future such meetings were not rare.

UEFA.com recalls the most effective matches of the championships of the Old World, of which it is better to forget about the defense players.

Nine heads – once

Che -1960: France - Yugoslavia 4: 5

The plot of the starting match of the first European Championship is perhaps the most dramatic in the entire 52-year history of the tournament. Shortly before the break, the French led with a score of 2: 1, and the hail of the heads in the second half portrayed nothing. A quarter of an hour before the end of the meeting, the “tricolor” led 4: 2, but the three goals of the Yugoslav football players over the next five minutes turned everything upside down.

Eight goals – once

Spain missed the first after a very unpleasant episode, in which Pedri made a long program to the goalkeeper, and the ball ducked into the net. Even before the break, the Pyrenees equalized the score, and by the 77th minute the efforts of Sesar Aspilicuet and Ferran Torres were already 3: 1. It seemed that it was all over, but the Croats managed to recoup thanks to the goals of Mislav Orshich (85th minute) and Mario Pashalich (90+2nd). In extra time, Alvaro Morata with an excellent blow again brought the Spaniards forward, and Mikel Oyarsabal put the oily point in the match. Thus, the Spanish national team became the first team in the history of the euro to score five goals in two games in a row.

Seven goals – three times

Only a few could believe in the chances of the Spaniards to enter the playoffs at the last minutes of the match of the final round of the group stage Euro 2000. The team of Jose Antonio Kamacho was arranged only in victory, but by the 90th minute it was inferior with a result of 2: 3. However, the Spaniards showed remarkable will and achieved their own. First, Gaiska Mendete realized the penalty, and then the rival was fenced by Alfonso Peres. Surprised Yugoslavov could only please the fact that they also overcame the barrier of the group stage.

The meeting in Rotterdam ended with the triumph of the orange, whose record is still holding on to this day – the owners of the euro scored an opponent as many as six goals. The author of three of them was Patrick Klyuvert, and Mark Overmars recorded the double at his own expense. However, the defeat of the Yugoslavov was not so much individual as team actions. The Balkans brightly showed themselves at the group stage, but in the fight with the team of Frank Raikaard, they did not even have a chance.
