On Thursday, December 30, the film “World Champion”, dedicated to the legendary match for the world chess crown between Anatoly Karpov and Viktor Korchny, is released on the screens of cinemas.
The matchmaster’s duel was held in 1978 in the Filipino Bagios: the Soviet chess player opposed the former compatriot who emigrated to Switzerland. It lasted from July 18 to October 18. The 32nd party became decisive: Anatoly Karpov won with a score of 6: 5.
The fight of outstanding chess players is primarily a fight of characters. Against the young genius, who barely took off to the chess Olympus, the child prodigy and idealist is a hardened fighter, obsessed and unpredictable, ready to fight with any weapon: chess for him is war. A virtuoso game, maximum psychological tension and personal, human confrontation between the two strongest chess players of the planet. The price of victory in this match is immeasurably high.
The director and author of the script, Alexei Sidorov, carried the idea of the picture for about 30 years. The production of the film was taken by the TRITE studio Nikita Mikhalkov, the Russia 1 TV channel, the Central Partnership film company, with the support of the Film Fund.
