Scooter is a musical trio, but from the moment of its founding the “invisible” fourth participant in the team, the manager Jens Tele is. He and the frontman Eich Pi Baxter are the only ones who remained in the group from the original composition. The change of the third participant every few years in the historiography of Scooter is linked with the opening of the next “chapter” in creativity.

Story

Periodization of the history of the group is given in accordance with the biography of the group on the official website and the own opinion of the team participants about their history. The article “Chapter” means precisely the head of the work of Scooter, as the team defined in his songs (for example, “Chapter Two”, “Chapter Three”, etc.), and not the head of this article itself.

Celebrate the Nun (1986-1991)

In 1986, Eich Pi Baxter (H. P. BaxXter, the real name of Hans-Peter Gerdes), the future frontman of the ScOoter group, met Hanover with the composer and arranger Rick Jordan (Rick J. JordanHe is Hendrick Stadler), posting an announcement in the newspaper on the search for the keyboard player, while Jordan in the same issue posted an announcement about the search for the singer [8]. In the same year, they created a group called Celebrate the Nun (“Monashka” ”).In 1989, their first studio album was released – Meanwhile . As part of the group, by that time, there were four participants – sister Eich Pi Brit Maxim joined the team (Britt Maxime) and Slin Thompson (Slin Tompson), who left the group in 1990. Axel Henninger, famous in Germany, produced the group, who had previously worked with Camouflage. The album consisted of 12 full -fledged songs performed by a bacter with vocal support to Maxim, who independently performed one song in each of the two albums of the team. One of the compositions, “Will You Be there”, got into the first five in the dance chart of an American magazine Billboard [9] [10]. In 1991, the group released its second and last album, Continous , with the main single Patience in his support. In total, the Celebrate The Nun group released five single, two studio albums and a number of DJ-sping [11].

We wanted to become part of a wave like the one that swept through England in the early eighties: New Order, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy. But with this sound we were late for six years. – Rick Jordan, [12]

The Loop! (1993-1998)

After the collapse of Celebrate The Nun Jordan and Baxter lost sight of each other for a year and a half. At this time, Eich Pi worked at the recording company Edelwhere I met the producer Jens Tele (Jens Thele). In 1993, Jordan and Baxter settled in his studio in Hanover and began to engage in mixing for other performers as part of the Loop project! (The loop!). Among those for whom they made remixes were ADEVA, Holly Johnson, Tag Team, Ru Paul, Marky Mark and other musicians. Gradually, their work began to be valued in the leading clubs of Germany, and they began to be invited to concert performances [13].

On one of these performances in the Hamburg club Palladium Eich Pi, in which the talents of not only the singer and the author of texts were manifested, but also the so -called MC, began to spontaneously shout under the initially instrumental composition various river and the phrase “Hyper Hyper” (that is, “Hyper Hyper!”). It was this name that was given to the first single Scooter, which brought the group fame [14].

However, you can explain the reason for the change of name. The third participant came to the team, cousin Aich Pi, Ferris Buller (Ferris Bueller). Also The Loop! They asked to produce the Dutch house on Vallée de Larmes. The Loop! He matured for independent activity. Therefore, the participants gradually moved away from a purely remicor project to an independent group. Since that day, the “invisible fourth participant” Jens the body has been the permanent producer and manager of SCOOTER [13] to this day.

For a long time, the veterans of the group could not really explain why they decided to be called Scooter, and not otherwise. However, in the biographical book published in 2013 Scooter: Always Hardcore The Baxter said that the Vallée de Larmes motive reminded him of fair melodies, as well as bumper machines, which are called Autoscooter in German [15].

The first chapter in work (1993-1998)

SCOOOTER Group during the first chapter: Rick Jordan, Ferris Buller, Aich Pi Baxter

Regarding the exact date of the base of the SCOOOTER group as an independent team, discussions continue. All of the above points can be described as prehistory. However, in December 1993, the first vinyl was released under the label of the Scooter project – Vallee de larmes, and later, in February 1994, a version of the single was released on CD. It is December 1993 that is considered the time of the founding of the group.

Vallée de larmes was only a revised version of a composition by Dutch musicians Gaston Steenkiest (DJ Dobre) and Rene Horst (DJ Zki). The names of the Dutch are listed as the authors of the title track of this single, as well as the main authors of two remixes on it. The only track in the single was the b-side Cosmos, which was subsequently included in the debut album Scooter. That is why the band members never included the single Vallee de larmes to their official discography. The track was not included in any of the group's hits compilations, with the exception of the album Rough Tough Dangerous – The Singles 94/98, where the extended version from The Loop! [16] However, Cosmos, Scooter's first solo effort, was released on vinyl in 1993.

The first independent single Scooter appeared in 1994. Hyper Hyper has become the motto of a generation of ravers who have begun to use these words to describe something unimaginable that causes purely positive emotions in them [17] . The song contains lyrics similar to Annihilating Rhythm by Scottish artist Ultra-Sonic, but the single's musical content was original. In addition, two teams, at the insistence of the record company Edel, made a remix of each other, which eliminated the hostility of Ultra-Sonic towards Scooter [18] [19] . The group managed to transform its message into something more. The debut single sold 750,000 copies and reached number two in the German single chart, while it was awarded a gold record [20] [21], then – platinum. Hyper Hyper took first place in Spain, thanks to which a Spanish version of the song appeared on the second edition of the single – On a Spanish Fly Tip, entered the top five singles in Switzerland, Austria and Italy; the top ten of the music chart in the Netherlands and Norway, the second gold record was awarded to the single in Austria [22] .

The band's first album was released in 1995. …and the Beat Goes On! (… and the rhythm continues), which included four singles title tracks at once – Hyper Hyper, Move Your Ass!, Friends (the last two reached number three in Germany) and Endless Summer, which received gold” status with high sales. Move Your Ass! conquered the charts of most European countries, then climbed to second place in the charts European Top 20TV channel MTV Europe. The single reached the top five in the charts in Switzerland, Austria and the Netherlands, the top ten in Italy and Norway, and also peaked at number 11 in France, number 15 in Ireland and number 16 in Belgium [22] . The video for the song Friends was filmed in Paris, and the video for Endless Summer was filmed on the coast in Miami (USA). The album won two platinum awards, one of which was brought by Ireland. UK single Move Your Asses! released as an EP containing the title tracks from the singles Friends and Endless Summer [23] .

In their debut album, Scooter offered listeners a lively atmosphere overlaid with the sounds of the crowd, shouts (literally – shouts calling for fun) and simple phrases from MC, fast rhythms dominated by sounds associated with genres such as jungle, breakbeat, acid techno and happy hardcore [24]. The title tracks of the singles are characterized by the presence of a voice MC (Baxter), catchy lyrics, high basses and a variety of sounds [24] . In Hyper Hyper, the band used the effect of a sudden pause in the middle of the track [14] , and also said hello to thirty famous DJs of the early and mid-1990s [14] . One of the key secrets of success Baxter called the reduction of the duration of the original instrumental 5-minute track to radio format – three and a half minutes [25] . Move Your Ass! distinguished by its industrial sound and original lyrics [24] . Endless Summer uses a similar structure, but the happy, hardcore piano sounds take center stage. Friends, according to some critics, turned out to be the strongest single, and had a great influence on the popularization of the direction. happy hardcore [24]. Other compositions in …and the Beat Goes On! are a mixture of trance, techno and acid [24] . Rhapsody in E, written in G-sharp minor, is full of modulations of the sound timbre and creates an ambient atmosphere. Beautiful Vibes combines jungle rhythms and piano sounds happy hardcore. The development of Rhapsody in E was another atmospheric composition Cosmos, and Raving In Mexico stands out for its hypnotic sounds. The album ends with Faster Harder Scooter – a kind of accelerated version of Hyper Hyper [24] .

In February 1996, the group's second album was released – Our Happy Hardcore received three gold records, as well as first place and platinum status in Hungary, and in general was presented in positions much higher and in more countries than the debut album [23] . Single Back in the U.K. ”, which played the music from the Miss Marple movie, opened the way for the group to the Top 20 of the UK charts and was released especially for Ireland with slightly changed chorus lyrics and the title as a separate single – Back In Ireland. With the exception of the first single from the album, which brought the group the fifth gold in the German singles chart, Our Happy Hardcore turned out to be very hard in sound, it contains much less trance, the emphasis is on happy hardcore, also the sounds of acid, jungle and breakbeat continue to be used in compositions [26] . The album also included the singles Let Me Be Your Valentine (it only reached the top 10 in Austria [22]) and Rebel Yell (Russian: Rebel Scream), a cover version of Billy Idol's rock hit. H. P. Baxter showcased his vocals on this song [26] . The rest of the tracks on the album use melodic and catchy melodies with a fast beat (“Stuttgart”, “Experience”, “Last Minute”), in places with a darker atmosphere (“This Is a Monstertune”), sometimes with not entirely successful experiments in building compositions (Our Happy Hardcore, Crank It Up) [26] . In general, Scooter's second album turned out to be less ambitious in comparison with …and the Beat Goes On!but contains quite melodic and dance tracks [26]. OUR Happy Hardcore was the first CD-EXTRA, released by a German performer. The multimedia part contains various stories about the shooting of clips, photographs, information about the group [27]. In the same year, the team moved from Hanover to Hamburg, where a new studio was organized.

In September 1996, the second group was released for the year and the third album – Wicked! (Clog!) [Comm. one] . The album is very different in sound from the previous two [28]. The sounds of the bagpipes in “Introduction” flow into the song “I’m Raving” [28], which took second place in Finland as a single, fourth place in Germany, earned two “gold” awards in their homeland [22]. The I’m Raving uses a melody in the unofficial hymn of Scotland the Brave, and at the same time this is the European version of Walking in Memphis [28]. The pace of the single was 138 BPM (blows per minute) and was completely uncharacteristic for the Happy Hardcore. The vigorous principle is replaced by the progressive tool track “Awakening”, after which the cheerful Happy-Khardornaya “When I Was An Young Boy”, filled with Breikbit, rhythms of Dzhanl, piano and “playful” phrases from Eich Pi [28], sounds again. The second half of the album begins with the instrumental composition “Coldwater Canyon” with hypnotic sounds of synthesizers and unexpected rhythm changes [28]. The following is Zebras Crossing the Street, in which there is a chorus synthesized by the vocoder, and the atmosphere similar to Cosmos from the first album [28]. Calm Chillout (Scooter del Mar) was negatively accepted by musical critics for the vulgar sound [28]. A fun song with the verses “Don’t let it be” sounds intermittently, but returns the album to a positive Happy Hardcore sounds [28]. The composition “The First Time” for the first time in the work of the group sounds a female voice against the background of the rhythms of Breikbit and Jallla, with the active use of bass and synthesizers [28]. The final chord was the romantic song “Break it Up” written for Scooter Katzmann, the first techno-ballad in the world [29]. Break It Up was released as a separate single. Wicked! The first album exceeded the number of “gold” entries in half, he had four of them. Like the first album, he brought the Germans two “platinums” awards – in the Czech Republic and Hungary [23]. By 1996, SCOOTER managed to give concerts in many European clubs and first performed in Asia.

The last studio album of the first chapter, Age of Love (The era of love), went out in 1997. The single “Fire” with its electric guitar solo was included in the feature film “Deadly Battle 2: Experience” (and fell into a collection of music for the film “Hackers 2”). The main theme of the song “The Age of Love” repeated music from the film “Terminator” with short changes [30]. The group’s repertoire has changed somewhat: in comparison with the first Scooter albums, they began to turn less to the Happy Hardcore sounds [31]. The number of blows in tracks on average decreased, but diversity increased – echoes Happy Hardcore, Dzhanl, Breikbit and Drama-n-Bace, you can find in “Don`t Waste No Time” and “Tonight”, and techno, trance and eice is present in “She Said”, “Forever (Keep Me Running),“ Hit The Drum ”[31]. The “funny” piano sounds in “Return of the Future” [31]. There are more or less successful “slow” techno-experiments in the album-“Dancing in the MoonLight” and “Leave in Silence”.The last track is the new techno-ballad, written by Nozi Katzmann, but not received and the shadow of the popularity of “Break it up” [31]. Age of Love I received three gold awards. Both single from the fourth album reached the first place in Finland. “Fire” became the owner of the “golden” status and fifth place in the German chart, and “The Age of Love” was awarded awards for the best video of the year at the festival Animago’98 [22], in Hungary, the single also brought the Germans the “gold” and the third place in the chart [22]. In 1998, the first concert tour of the group was held in support of the new album, within the framework of which the first performance of Scooter in Russia took place.

Completed the first chapter in the work of the collection of the best compositions for the period from 1994 to 1998 – Rouchh Touch Dangerous – The Singles 94/98 . The collection consists of two disks. The first shows 11 title compositions from the singles of the first chapter, as well as the new single “No Fate”, quite highly appreciated in Russia and Finland, where he took second place in the chart [22]. Four paths of “living” versions of songs from the group concerts were added to these 12 tracks. The second disk contains the best remixes and bi-sites from the group of the group [32].

After the release of this collection, already while working on a new single, Ferris Buller for independent creativity left the group. Its first released single, Girl, had no success. In the 2000s, Ferris worked as a musical producer. In 2010, Ferris admitted that for many years he suffered from depression, which became one of the main reasons for leaving the group [33].
